Angel Tears - November 29, 2010

The sun dipped low in the sky, changing the trees into inky shadows, and, as I watched the sky turn from the beautiful pale orange and pink to black, I knew tonight was the night.
I waited expectantly for the moonlight to replace the suns rays. Only in them could he come to me; all the signs pointed to tonight. Every fiber in me, said he would come tonight.
I sat near the edge of the lake where we had met, that one in a million chance last summer. I smiled as I got caught up in the memory. If I hadn’t been delayed because of that major traffic jam I would have gotten here too soon. I wouldn’t have seen the light, or heard the weeping.
I laid back on the grass. It was almost time.
I stared up at the sky, the clouds above me parted to show the millions of stars that were usually shrouded in the city. Then the moon broke through and cast it’s light over me. The air shimmered as I watched, turning a golden hue.
The pearly wings appeared first, then the body, taking a few more seconds to become solid. It took me a few seconds to really believe what I was seeing in front of me.
“Alan,” I murmured.  He gave me a sad smile. “You came back,” I said in awe, “You’re really here.” He nodded, bending to give me a hand up. “I missed you so much,” I said, taking his face in my hands, making sure he really was real, that he really was in front of me.
“I can’t stay long,” he said quietly.
    “I know, only one day.”
“No.” He shook his head sadly. “Not this time.”     “What do you mean?” I asked, a hint a fear spreading into my voice. “I waited a whole year to see you again, why can’t you stay at least a day?” I heard myself becoming frantic.
He took my hands in his, looking me in the eye as he said, “You need to move on. I can’t keep holding you back, you need to move forward in your life.”
“You are my life!” I pleaded, “You can’t leave me. Not again.” He stroked my cheek, a small smile on his lips.
“I died, Paige. A year and a half ago, you can’t live waiting for one day of the year to be happy.”
“Then take me back up with you,” I begged. “I can’t stand another year without you.”
He brought my hand to his lips, kissing it gently. “Yes, you can. You can still make something out of your life here.”
“No,” I shook my head. “No.”
“I love you,” he whispered, bringing one of the softest kiss to my lips. “Don’t wait for me.” His form wavered and I heard myself sobbing.
“No,” I wailed, “Please!” I gripped his hands as tightly as I could, until all I clasped was my own.
His voice reverberated around me, “I’ll always be with you.”
I fell to my knees, crying into the dark. Looking up into the sky, all I could see was the glint of angle’s tears suspended in space. A gentle breeze caressed my skin and I new it was his final good bye. My husband was really gone.
